Mathematics is a fundamental subject which develops critical thinking and problem-solving skills. At Kennet School, we strive to instil a love for mathematics and its applications in real life.

Curriculum Overview

Key Stage Qualification Taught
3 -
4 GCSE Mathematics
4 Level 2 Extended Mathematics ✔*
5 A Level Mathematics
5 A Level Further Mathematics

* Available to our Set 1 mathematicians only (our most able).

Key Stage 3

Pupils build a strong foundation in mathematical concepts, including number theory, algebra, geometry, and data handling. Interactive lessons and practical applications help pupils see the relevance of mathematics in everyday life.

Key Stage 4

We offer GCSE Mathematics, a comprehensive two-year course covering higher-level algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and statistics. Pupils develop analytical skills and learn to apply mathematical reasoning to solve complex problems.

We also offer our Set 1 mathematicians (our most able) the opportunity to take a new Level 2 Extended Mathematics course which is designed to stretch and challenge high-achieving pupils who either already have, or are expected to achieve the top grades in GCSE Mathematics.

Key Stage 5

Our two-year A Level Mathematics course dives deeper into advanced topics such as calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations. Students also explore applied mathematics, including mechanics and statistics. The course prepares students for further education and careers in STEM fields.

Those who have demonstrated strong GCSE results in Mathematics and show a natural flair for the subject are able to study A Level Mathematics as a one-year course, with A Level Further Mathematics in the second year.

Facilities

The Mathematics Department facilities support a collaborative learning environment, fostering both individual and group work to enhance mathematical understanding. Pupils are encouraged to participate in the junior, intermediate and senior UKMT Maths Challenges where they tackle a variety of engaging mathematical activities whilst developing teamwork and communication skills too.
