Performance
The UK Government produces annual performance tables to allow parents and pupils to compare the schools' results in their local area, as well as a benchmarking service for financial health.
Performance Tables
For secondary schools, the statistics detail pupils' performance in GCSEs (and equivalent exams) at the end of Key Stage 4 (Year 11 - pupils aged 15–16 years old) and A Levels (and equivalents) (Year 13 - pupils aged 17–18 years old).
Schools are judged by two measures: Progress 8 and Attainment 8 scores, which are based on pupils' performance in eight qualifications. However, the tables also cover information such as the percentage of pupils who have achieved the English Baccalaureate and the percentage of pupils who stay in education at the end of Key Stage 4.

Progress 8
Progress 8 is a measure of the progress children make between the end of primary school and the end of secondary school. Schools are given a score based on how their pupils have progressed compared with the national average. It is a type of value-added measure, which means pupils’ results are compared to the actual achievements of other pupils with similar prior attainment.
The new performance measures are designed to encourage schools to offer a broad and balanced curriculum with a focus on an academic core at Key Stage 4, and reward schools for the teaching of all their pupils, measuring performance across eight qualifications. Every increase in every grade a pupil achieves will attract additional points in the performance tables. Progress 8 was 0.15 in 2024 (the average in England was -0.03).
Attainment 8
Attainment 8 measures the achievement of a pupil across eight qualifications, including Mathematics (double weighted) and English (double weighted), three further qualifications that count in the English Baccalaureate (EBacc) measure and three further qualifications that can be GCSE qualifications (including EBacc subjects) or any other non-GCSE qualifications on the Department for Education approved list. Each individual grade a pupil achieves is assigned a point score, which is then used to calculate a pupil’s Attainment 8 score. Attainment 8 for 2024 was 47.5 (the average in England was 45.9).
Schools Financial Benchmarking
What is Schools Financial Benchmarking?
Schools Financial Benchmarking is a dashboard compiled by the Government which provides school business professionals with the assurance that they are meeting the basic standards necessary to achieve a good level of financial health and resource management. Anyone can use it to compare schools, academies and trusts across England.
The dashboard tool can be used to identify possible areas for investigation and improvement to ensure that resources are used to support high-quality teaching and the best educational outcomes for pupils. It shows how a school’s data compares to thresholds on a range of statistics, identified by the Department for Education as indicators of good resource management and outcomes.
