Train with Us
Teachers do much more than teach and their impact extends far beyond the classroom. One of the most common reasons for seeking a career in teaching is to make a positive impact on people's lives, and it sure is rewarding.
If you're interested in becoming a teacher, there are three main routes:
- Apprenticeships
- School-led training
- University-led training.
All take a year (full-time) and result in Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) being awarded. You may also achieve a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) through any of these routes.
Apprenticeships
The Postgraduate Teacher Apprenticeship is a distinctive pathway for those seeking an alternative to traditional university-based teacher training.
As part of this apprenticeship, trainee teachers gain practice and on-the-job experience while employed by Kennet School (via the Equinox Learning Trust). Trainees receive a salary based on the unqualified teacher pay scale and benefit from not having to pay high tuition fees.
This route provides practical, hands-on experience and financial support for aspiring teachers.
School-Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT)
Kennet School is a key partner in The Downland Alliance, West Berkshire’s Hub for Initial Teacher Training. Please visit the OTT SCITT website for details of all the programmes offered, training locations, and details about information events and application workshops. Applications are processed through the Department for Education’s teacher training ‘apply’ portal; the provider code is 24T. Select ‘The Downland Alliance’ as your study location.
University-led Training (PGCE)
These courses are offered by a range of institutions and focus on developing your teaching skills through a mixture of university-based sessions and school-based experience. We currently offer placements with the University of Reading.
