Curriculum Outline
Key Stage 3
Year 7
At Kennet School, all pupils in Year 7 benefit from a diverse and comprehensive curriculum designed to provide a well-rounded education. Our subjects include:
The above subjects are taught one lesson a week, except for English and Maths which is taught three lessons a week, Science and French two lessons a week and Dance/Physical Education, Design & Technology/Food, Preparation & Nutrition taught in a carousel.
All lessons are taught in mixed ability groups, apart from Mathematics and English, which are set based on primary school data and baseline tests.
Year 8
The Year 8 curriculum at Kennet School closely mirrors the Year 7 structure, ensuring continuity and consistency in learning. Most lessons are taught in broad ability bands, with setting based on attainment and regularly reviewed after assessment points. The most able linguists have the opportunity to study both French and German, further enhancing their language skills.
Year 9
The organisation of the curriculum in Year 9 remains broadly the same as in Year 8.
During this year, Year 9 pupils undertake the options process. Each is allocated a pathway for Key Stage 4 which meets their needs and reflects their prior attainment. To ensure the best outcomes, pupils and parents are supported throughout this process, including individual meetings with every pupil to discuss and finalise their options.
Key Stage 4
Years 10 & 11
Key Stage 4 of the National Curriculum leads to examinations in GCSE and equivalent qualifications (pupils chose their options in Year 9 following discussion and consultation).
All pupils study a core curriculum, consisting of:
- English Language and Literature (3 x lessons per week)
- Mathematics (3 x lessons per week)
- Science (4 x lessons per week)
- Personal, Social & Health Education (PSHE) (1 x lesson per week, non-examination)
- Physical Education (PE) (1 x lesson per week, non-examination)
* either Combined (worth two GCSEs) or Triple Science (worth three GCSEs) depending on Year 9 Options pathways.
Setting continues in English, Mathematics and Science to ensure optimal learning environments.
In addition to the core curriculum, pupils choose four optional subjects according to their pathways, each allocated three lessons per week.
