Sixth Form Unveils Inclusive Space for Students with Disabilities

Kennet Sixth Form has created a state-of-the-art space designed to better support students with disabilities.

In an exciting step toward inclusivity and greater accessibility, Kennet Sixth Form has completed a significant renovation to an area near its Common Room, creating a state-of-the-art space designed to better support students with disabilities. This project, funded by West Berkshire Council, marks a milestone in the school's ongoing commitment to ensuring that every student, regardless of their physical abilities, can fully participate in Sixth Form life.

Key Features of the New Space
The newly built room is equipped with several features designed with accessibility in mind:

  • A Fully Accessible Toilet: The room includes a modern, fully accessible toilet complete with a mobile-controlled toilet, a hoist, and a bed. This ensures that students with varying needs have all the support and comfort they require.
  • Physio Room: There is also a dedicated physio room, which provides space for necessary treatments and rehabilitation, further promoting the wellbeing of students who may require physical therapy.
  • Study Space: Recognising the importance of academic integration, a designated study area has been included, allowing students to focus and engage in their studies in a quiet, accessible environment.
  • Magnetised Exterior Doors: All exterior doors in the building have been fitted with press-button and magnetised systems, making entry and exit easy and efficient for everyone.

Promoting Inclusivity and Integration
One of the most significant impacts of this new space is the way it integrates students with disabilities into the wider Sixth Form community. By providing them with an accessible and inclusive environment within the Common Room, the project encourages more social interaction, collaboration, and participation in school activities. Students who previously may have felt somewhat isolated now have a dedicated space where they can engage with their peers, attend group study sessions, and take part in social events, fully integrating them into the heart of the Sixth Form community.

Looking ahead, this new renovation paves the way for Kennet Sixth Form to welcome a broader and more diverse student body. The upgrades not only ensure that the school meets the current needs of its students but also position it to accept students from far and wide. With improved facilities and enhanced accessibility, the Sixth Form is better equipped to serve a larger group of students, promoting diversity and equal opportunity in education.

Head of Sixth Form, Mr Tamale, said: "We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to West Berkshire Council for funding this transformative project. Their support has made a huge difference in the lives of our students, and their commitment to enhancing accessibility and inclusion in education is truly commendable.

"This new addition is not just a physical space, but a symbol of the school’s commitment to ensuring every student feels valued, included, and empowered to reach their full potential. We are excited about the future and the many ways this renovation will benefit our students for years to come."
