Kennet School is thrilled to have seen a significant improvement in reading abilities amongst its Year 7 pupils over the past academic year, thanks to the implementation of targeted reading initiatives and exceptional support from our parent community.
As part of our ongoing commitment to literacy and lifelong learning, Kennet introduced a series of focused programmes designed to foster a love of reading and build confidence amongst younger pupils. Initiatives such as shared reading, the Kennet Canon of recommended texts, and increased reading mentor opportunities have played a key role in this success.
“We have seen a real cultural shift around reading in recent year,” said Ms G Rigg, Headteacher. “Our pupils are more engaged, more confident, and more enthusiastic about reading than ever before.”
The Kennet Canon, a curated collection of enriching and age-appropriate books, has given pupils a strong foundation in quality literature across year groups. Whilst our Year 7 shared reading programme has helped build fluency and comprehension. Additionally, the enthusiasm and involvement from our parent community has been invaluable, from supporting reading at home to volunteering for in-school reading sessions.
“This has truly been a team effort,” she added. "The collaboration between staff, pupils, and families has made all the difference.
“Kennet School remains committed to ensuring every pupil develops the reading skills they need to succeed across all areas of the curriculum. With these encouraging results, the school plans to expand its literacy initiatives in the coming year to build on this strong foundation.
“Children with already exceptional reading here have been enthused by our Kennet’s month-long Bookfest and Scholars Reading Programe.”
